Functional Safety Conference

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY CONFERENCE 2023 FSCPH’23

FSCPH’23 was held at Roskilde Congress Center, on Thursday 4th May 2023

We in FSCPH had the privilege to host the 4th Functional Safety Conference
– after years with COVID-19 and a subsequent boom in the industry.

Although this year’s conference, was very different from the conferences held in 2015, 2017 and 2019 with only 1 day and 1 common track with both Machinery- and Process Safety and a much smaller exhibition area, it was a huge success.

We appreciate all the positive feedback from the participants, who represented no less than 35 companies

We had 7 magnificent speakers: David Hatch from Wolters Kluwer Enablon, Alberto Martinez from ProjectBinder, Thomas Hoffmeyer from Rambøll Energy, Tomas Bro from ELTRONIC Fueltech, Josse Brys from HIMA, Colin Easton from EFSTAS and Stefan Lynge Christensen from Energinet all shared their knowledge, reality and their views on future trends and risks for the benefit of making Functional Safety understood and approachable.

The breaks was used for networking and good discussions with the 5 exhibitors: ABB, Geopal, Global Functional Safety, Kairos and Wolter Kluwer. Unfortunately, EFSTAS was not able to attend the conference except for the online presentation.

We at FSCPH would like to thank all speakers, all participants and all exhibitors for participating in making the event a success. Without you, Functional Safety will remain a standard and not a tool for improving safety.

09:05 - 09:50EN │ Wolters Kluwer Enablon
Enhancing Functional Safety Analysis & Assurance using Bowties.

The benefits of bowties & barrier management following the Functional Safety lifecycle with particular focus on Cyber Security (per Clause 8.2.4 of 61511-1) and LOPA (per Annex F of 61511-3). Visualizing scenarios in bowtie format helps all stakeholders understand the context and criticality of both SIS and non-SIS risk reduction measures to ensure their presence & performance is sustained.

David Hatch
Functional Safety Specialist, Wolters Kluwer Enablon

David Hatch is a Chemical & Process Engineer, IChemE Fellow and Professional Process Safety Engineer with over 35 years’ experience of high hazard facilities across a variety of industries. He is a Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) and a TÜV Functional Safety Engineer (FSEng) specializing in Bowtie Analysis and Barrier Management with a particular focus on LOPA and scenario risk quantification.
09:50 - 10:35EN │ ProjectBinder
Digital Twin Technology for evaluation of Machine Safety in Industry 4.0.

How can the Digital Twin Technology be used for evaluation of machine safety? ProjectBinder will share our findings and explore possibilities to use Digital Twin in optimizing the assessment and validation of machine safety requirements.

Alberto Martinez
IT/OT Engineer, ProjectBinder

Holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering at DTU and in Industrial Engineering at (UPV).
10:35 - 11:00Networking │ Exhibition

Tomas Broe
Process Risk Expert, ELTRONIC Fueltech

12:30 - 13:30Lunch │ Networking & Exhibition
Frokost, netværk & udstilling
13:30 - 14:15EN │ HIMA
Secure your investment with the right functional safety and cyber security

Every investment needs the right Functional Safety and cyber security. Based on the IEC-61511 you will learn why an independent safety system has big advantages.

Josse Brys
Sales Director Europe & Africa,
HIMA

Josse Brys is the Sales Director Europe at HIMA and he is this year 11 years at HIMA. He is a Functional Safety Engineer since 2013 (TÜV Rheinland, #7708/13, SIS).
14:15 - 15:00EN │ EFSTAS
Security Risk Assessment, where are we now
As we look forward from 2019, we will review the current status of SRA and how SISs are now more at risk of exploitation by threat actors by increasing deperimeterisation, due to business interconnectivity and merging systems requirements, such as IoT and Industry 4.0. We will review a major ICS attack and the fallout as well as look at the current status of the standards and access to tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) frameworks and sources of threat data.

Colin Easton
TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Senior Expert,
EFSTAS

Colin has over 30 years of functional safety-related experience gained in the process industries working with Blue Chip Oil and Gas, Power Station, Chemical Plant Operators, Consultants, EPCs and system suppliers providing Assessment, auditing, verification and Hazard / SIL study facilitation services as well as advice and mentoring to the next generation of safety engineers.
Colin has international reputation for the provision of process and functional safety consultancy and training services and has a Master of Science in Engineering in Process Safety & Loss Prevention, is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control and an accredited TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Senior Expert.

SIS commissioning of the Baltic Pipe Gas Compressor Station
The presentation will introduce this highly complex and comprehensive energy infrastructure project, of Baltic Pipe - Compressor Station Everdrup. The project was forced into an extreme race with the time schedule, caused by the war in Ukraine and the extreme focus of energy need in Eastern Europe. The presentation will show some of the “real world” challenges and solutions found during the project, and how Energinet deals with high safety ethics and Functional Safety. Stefan will also share some of his thoughts about mobilizing completely new operation staff and establishing the systems to operate the functional safety in the future.

Stefan Lynge Christensen
Senior Engineer - Technology Development, Energinet

Stefan is process and safety engineer with comprehensive experience of Functional Safety from many large energy projects globally. He currently possesses the role of commissioning engineer of the 10 BCM capacity natural gas compressor-station for the Baltic Pipe Line From Norway, Denmark to Poland. He is certified from TÜV and IChemE and experienced from on-site operation experience as well as design and specification in engineering consultancy.
